Amazon retain the copy right of it users’ comments

The full phrasing is “If you do post content or submit material, and unless we indicate otherwise, you grant Amazon.com and its affiliates a nonexclusive, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, and fully sublicensable right to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, and display such content throughout the world in any media.”

This last bit of information seems to me the most interesting because it would enable them to develop any sort of new content and why not in-print to further develop their brand.

I would be very interesting to see what would happen in the future. I have also put a trigger in watchwebsite to see if they modify it.

Original text in English and in French (“article 10″)

The structure of the text is the same in both language :

  • Not illegal
  • Not misleading and stolen identy
  • Right of Amazon but not the obligation to remove or edit and leave to the users the responsibility of the posted content.
  • You grant amazon.com non exclusive royalty-free () rights to use … derivative work from.

However, the French and English text are different, In France the readers’ renunce to be identified as the author of the comment. That may be due to some particularity of the French law. The French law give doesn’t allow the author to completely waived his right.

Amazon shorts doesn’t “do” user generated content or even new author!

Amazon shorts doesn’t seems to publish new authors and user generated content for its new series Amazon Shorts. The enphasis is placed on credited authors. I think it's a way to reassure the buyers that "real litterature."

The sales point 18th of May were :

  • "New York Times bestselling author Jacquelyn Mitchard's first novel"
  • "Veteran writer Steven D. Stark, pop culture analyst on National Public Radio and contributor to the L"
  • and even under the title 'New Author Spotlight: Bentley Little' bestselling author Bentley Little has been thrilling readers for…."

Amazon Shorts is a new program started by Amazon.com, the leading online book retailer, several months ago. Through the program, previously published book authors are invited to submit original short stories, essays, and more for evaluation. If accepted, the story will be published on Amazon.com under the Amazon Shorts section and each piece may be purchased for 49 cents. Stories are available in three digital formats: PDF, email, and as a HTML page. Purchased pieces are always available to the purchaser through their Amazon account’s Digital Locker.

From print to web and return ?

November 2005, Seven Seas Entertainment*, announced that it was expanding its publishing line to include three"fan-favorite" webcomics; Inverloch**, Earthsong and Chugworth Academy.

The author of this webcomic www.seraph-inn.com Sarah Ellerton give an interview there

So why print to web and return ?
Sarah Ellerton's response gives me the impression that the web is more a further way to get to the public. ”As far as the print side of things goes, I'm a graphic designer by profession, therefore I'm experienced with working with print design, and preparing my files for print, was no trouble.”

About web diffusion:

A very interesting part of the interview was “I think it's great that a comic that is being provided completely free online can still do really well in print format. Obviously there are many advantages to having a printed copy of a webcomic, such as image quality and portability, and readers are aware of that.” “I think the biggest problem I've had with my webcomic is being able to have it hosted cheaply and reliably. It consumes a lot of data transfer each month, and I've switched hosts several times.”

A measure of her success : 25,000 unique visitors / 1.5 million hits less popular gaming and gag comics. When update time comes a loot of crashing happen.

* a Los Angeles-based publisher originally dedicated to publication of Original English Language (OEL) manga Seven Seas’ official website is located at gomanga.com.

Citizen journalism

Interesting pledge to citizen journalism of blufftontoday. (South Carolina) Readers of the local community can tell their own story but the features i the daily newspaper are written by professional journalist. There is a good picture selection. Curiously the film critics seem to be provided from the CHICAGO TRIBUNE and not the readers.

Do 50,000 hits mean anything when it comes to book sales?

Rachel Deahl of “the book standard” doesn’t really provide a response to the question.

Namely, does the success on line necessarily mean success in print?

She cites numerous book deals for successful blogs ranging from $ 30 000 to $750 000…

And concludes speaking abotu the the winner of blooker priceWhich is to say, Julie and Julia may succeed for all the reasons that books typically does, when they do—regardless of its beginnings as a blog. And that, of course, just may be the point.”

Not my opinion because I think blook can carrie some freshness that conventional publishing doesn’t always do. Julie and Julia rankes #6,058 in Amazon’s books’ sales.
